A marina’s published maximum vessel length is not the same as a berth offer. Measure the whole boat and ask about the exact place you will tie up.
01 / THE METHOD
Know your real dimensions
Record length overall including bowsprit, davits and tenders; maximum beam; loaded draft; air draft; displacement and shore-power requirements. Use the measurement the marina specifies, and do not round down. Catamarans and wide-beam vessels often have fewer suitable berths even where a published length limit looks generous.
02 / THE METHOD
Ask about the specific berth
A marina-wide maximum describes the largest vessel the facility may handle, not what is available today. Ask for the proposed pen or pontoon dimensions, depth alongside at the relevant datum, finger-pontoon arrangement, fender and line requirements, power pedestal and fairway clearance. Confirm whether tidal level changes the usable depth for your boat.
03 / THE METHOD
The approach is part of the fit
A suitable berth is useless if your draft or mast cannot safely reach it. Use current official charts and notices to assess the route, then confirm local arrival advice with the marina. Ask about controlling depth, bridges, restricted hours, weather limits and any lock or gate.
04 / THE METHOD
Put it in writing
For a visitor or long-term berth, send your vessel particulars in advance and ask the operator to confirm suitability and availability. Keep the written dimensions and instructions with your passage plan. If the answer is unclear, pause the booking and ask for a berth-specific explanation.
ASK THE OPERATOR
Questions about marina berth dimensions
- What exact berth is available for my LOA, beam and loaded draft?
- What depth is alongside and in the approach at the relevant tide?
- Will my mast, appendages and power connection fit?
- Are there vessel-type or insurance restrictions?
Record berth-specific answers and source dates
A blank field is useful when it becomes a precise question. Record who answered, when they answered and whether the reply applies to the exact berth, vessel and dates.
These questions support a shortlist, not a berth guarantee or navigation plan. Advice can be wrong; consult current official information and the site disclaimer.
